Nelson's Story

Meet Deisy Franco!

Mi nombre es nayibe Martinez.

Oriunda Balboa cauca.

My name is Nayib Martinez. Native Balboa Cauca. I am currently based in the city of Popayan, Cauca, Colombia. The reason was that they sent me to the Popayan Hospital when I was pregnant, 15 years ago. I could not return to my town because I was pregnant with some beautiful twins, which made me a high-risk pregnant woman.

My twins were born at 30 weeks gestation. My son Yeison Franco Martinez was diagnosed with cerebral palsy. My daughter Deisy Franco Martinez was diagnosed at birth with Alagille. The reason for her diagnosis was because she broke out with many pimples and had a lot of itching and cardio-hepatic pulmonary stenosis.

Deisy was treated for 8 years in the city of Popayan. At 8 years old, a new neuropediatrician arrived in the city there. Praise my daughter Deisy and that’s how she was sent to the city of Cali to a fourth level hospital where they did a liver biopsy. It came out positive Alagille Syndrome and the need for a liver transplant was there. That is how the protocol began. She was received by Dr. Veronica Botero, a nice person and a nice doctor. There is where they put her on the cadaver transplant waiting list and with God’s help after 7 months of waiting the donor appeared. They called me and told me that I should be transferred to the valley foundation from Lili because my daughter was going to have a transplant. It was a 3-month stay in the hospital. Everything was going very well with the transplant until she came back and got sick. They had to do lung surgery. For some time they gave us a release and we returned to our town from Popayan. It was very difficult because we had to be taking her every 15 days back. She has been improving and now we go to check-ups every month or two months.

Two years ago, Deisy underwent surgery because her portal vein was clogged and there was dilation of the intrahepatic bile duct. It is very difficult for us as parents to have a job, especially when we have two children with different diagnoses. Most of the time we must be aware of our children and our job is to fight with the GPS which requires a lot of time because they take medication. The characteristics of the disease are identified in my daughter, for example with the xanthomas that sprout on her skin and give her a lot of itching. Sometimes it’s down, today it’s fine tomorrow not. Things like that always happen in the family with this disease. It affects us and is a total change that one can’t imagine. It changes our whole life. I, as a mother, feel that I no longer have time for myself because I keep my children’s schedule moving. It’s very busy and changes our lives totally, but God gives us strength and wisdom and understanding to continue in the fight. To the families who live in the Alagille community, I would tell them this is a very difficult process but with faith in God everything is possible. My experience with the Alagille Alliance family has been very beautiful because I have learned many things from them that I had no knowledge of. We give each other a lot of encouragement and courage with the prayers and words of each other, thanking all of us who make up this beautiful group. To the Mrs. Roberta, and Mrs. Aide, with all my heart, thank you very much for everything you do for our children. The hope for the future with a serious daughter is that God declared her healthy in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. I want to finish his studies and be a great professional. I also wish the same for my son Yeison so that he may have a better future in life. They are fighters and warriors of life and they are going to achieve it with the blessing of God. We already have advice on what is Alagille’s disease to be able to inform other families so they can pass on our story. It took a long time to give my daughter the diagnosis. My story with my children is serious. Thank you very much to all of you. A big hug, thank you very much again to Mrs. Roberta and Aide ❤🙏🏻🥰
